Preserving Japanese Language & Cultural Heritage in Hawaii
Supporting Japanese language education and promoting cultural excellence among students across the Hawaiian Islands since 1915.
Quick Facts
About Us
Our Mission
To advance Japanese language instruction, cultural heritage, and academic excellence among students in Hawaii's Japanese language schools.
Why We Exist
Hawaii Kyoikukai traces its roots to the early 1900s, when Japanese immigrants established language schools to preserve their culture amid assimilation pressures. Formed in 1915 as an integrated educational board, we unified local associations to standardize curricula and support bilingual education. Today, we continue this legacy by bridging immigrant traditions with contemporary cultural preservation.
What We Do
- Award scholarships and recognitions to outstanding students
- Support curriculum development and teacher training
- Coordinate activities among member Japanese language schools
- Promote values like international understanding and cultural pride
